Recognising the damage

A small chip, surface crack, a crown coming off, or damage to the tooth underneath are different situations. Even a minor looking fracture may need an assessment of the underlying tooth.

First steps

Keep a detached piece in a clean container and bring it to your appointment. Avoid chewing on that side. Do not use household glue to reattach a crown; it may harm the tooth or gum and complicate repair.

Dental assessment

The dentist examines the restoration and the tooth beneath it. Depending on the findings, smoothing, a limited repair, recementation or replacement may be considered. Seek prompt care for pain, swelling or pain on biting.
